Generative Musical Birthday Calendar
Our teams built a phygital, generative music experience customized to each listener — based on location, date, time of day and the weather in your corner of the world.
In the Netherlands, perpetual 'birthday calendars' are a popular tradition. By writing the birthdays of friends and family on each date and hanging the calendar in your home (the Dutch like the bathroom!), you'll always remember your loved ones' special days - because everyone’s gotta go sometime.

Inspired by this tradition, we collaborated with artist Jordan Bruner to illustrate each month of a printed calendar to record your friends and family's birthdays, with a QR code to bring up the microsite.
To bridge the physical and digital, we built an evolving, ambient music generator that generates customized compositions for each user — based on the date, weather and time of day in their location.

By pairing a Dutch birthday calendar with a dynamic musical experience, our goal was not only to develop a nice experience for clients, collaborators, fans, friends and family — but to explore what javascript and RNBO could do with generative, aleatoric music creation in 2024.
Beyond musical birthday calendars, we see enormous potential for personalized musical experience in a vast range of fields - from the medical, mental health and wellness spaces, to sleep, productivity and public or commercial atria as well as in messaging and marketing.
